Research in the NSIC

Research is of the utmost importance for the future development in the treatment and rehabilitation of spinal cord injury and the National Spinal Injuries Centre is an active research centre.

If you are interested in finding out more about what research is and why we do it please speak to your Consultant, GP, or any other Healthcare Professional or you will find helpful information on the National Institute for Health Research website https://www.nihr.ac.uk/

If you want to be contacted to find out more about research that may be of interest to you and to possibly take part, Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (which National Spinal Injuries Centre is part of) has a scheme called ‘consent 4 contact’:

  • The consent 4 contact questionnaire will ask you a few questions on your area of interest e.g. bladder control and your contact details.
  • If an active research study with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is looking for people within that area of interest you may be contacted to see if you are interested to find out more.
  • You will be provided documentation to read and you will have opportunities to ask questions and time to decide on whether you would like to take part.

About Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research

Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research (SMSR) is an independent charity based at the National Spinal Injuries Centre. We aim to improve the quality of life for people living with spinal cord injury:
    • You could help us fund the vital research that could transform the lives of people living with a spinal cord injury.
    • Over 50,000 people in the UK are living with spinal cord injury, most of whom suffer with devastating complications that seriously affect their quality of life.
    • Our research grants programme supports projects with the potential to help people achieve greater independence, enabling them to engage more freely in education, work, hobbies, social activities and family life.
 Our research priorities are:
    1. Urinary tract infections
    2. Neuropathic pain
    3. Pressure ulcers
    4. Assistive technology that can help with upper limb function
